The E.U.

June 26, 2016

Well, on Friday I felt very, very disappointed, and that feeling gets worse by the day. I desperately wanted to remain in the E.U. I am not alone, it seems, and lets hope that something good comes out of this terrible mess. I don’t know what this means for British publishing, but I don’t think in the short term it’s going to be easy. All those decades of building environmental laws to protect our varied and beautiful wildlife face being undermined too. Will the government fight for funding of the Arts now, do you think? I hope the rest of Europe realises that almost half of the population didn’t want this. That’s the thing about democracies, sometimes they don’t go the way you want. This whole affair has been dividing cities, towns, and even families.”We build too many walls and not enough bridges” as Sir Isaac Newton said.

I’m going to work hard, the future is uncertain, I need to raise my game –  more diversity in my children’s books for a start. Hold firm people.

June 6, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-06-06 at 08.52.29

I’ll be going back to the West Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield for the Create Expo, on Thursday 21st July. This is a creative digital media conference, for students and professionals in the industry. Follow this link here for tickets and information. I’ll be doing a talk, along with Alex Traska (Director of Makermet Creative), 3D Artist Andrew Comb, Nick Kidney (of Bartle Bogle and Hegarty, London), Glen Southern, (Freelance Digital Sculptor), Iain Swales of Linney Group, Amy Smith of Framestore, and Simon Smalley of Fuzzy Frog.

So, a ton of varied creatives all keen to share their brains with you. Should be very useful!

It will be good to return to the College that taught me so much, I still use the techniques they taught me every day. Look forward to seeing you there.

I’m sorry to say our much loved rescue greyhound Leroy passed away recently. He came to us in a pretty sorry condition. Hopefully we made his final years happy. We miss him so much.Leroy_paper2

My Dog, Leroy!

Chamber of Secrets finished.

March 7, 2016

I have just completed all the inside plates for A Chamber of Secrets. It took about two and a half years to do the first book, and we had ten months to do the second. I can honestly say that’s been the hardest year of my life, working a minimum of 12 hours a day, seven days a week for a year straight, and immediately after book one. I got pretty ill, I am a wreck, but we managed it! I must thank everyone that has helped me through this, couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to Bloomsbury for all your patience, I am hard work at the best of times.

I also want to apologise for missing so many events, I have been ill for the good part of a year. Hopefully things will be better when I start book three. I do desperately want to get out more.

Book two was a lovely opportunity to work on some spiders….they are great to draw. Anyway, just a bit of tidying up to do, then my first proper break in three years. Can’t wait!

Patrick Ness meets Doctor Who – hooray!

October 6, 2015

I’m very excited about the forthcoming Doctor Who spin off series to be penned by the wonderful Patrick Ness! Read all about it here

I’ve just started reading his new book ‘The Rest of Us Just Live Here’, it’s great! He’s a talented and very busy chap. Well done Patrick!

That’s a lot of exclamation marks, but I think they are justified.

Interview in The Telegraph

The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

I had the pleasure of meeting Gaby Wood from the Telegraph recently, who has penned an article about illustrating Harry Potter in the Weekend Review. You can see the article here.

It’s strange for us having people around, and stranger still seeing your home life in a newspaper, but it really was lovely meeting Gaby and the Photographer, Toby Coulson. (His work is INCREDIBLE, by the way, have a look at his website here).

I had no idea until Gaby visited that she also wrote a book I’m particularly fond of, ‘Living Dolls: A Magical History of the Quest for Mechanical Life’. Do read it if you are fan of automata, and generally creepy mechanical dolls. Thanks again to the Telegraph for traveling up to Darkest Kettering, good to see you.

Help Patrick Ness Raise money for Save the Children!

September 4, 2015

Please donate whatever you can to Patrick’s Fundraising Page, I think we all felt pretty helpless seeing the news footage of families fleeing Syria, but here is something positive we can do. Please squeeze something out of your savings to help others try and start a better life. Many thanks.

Patrick Ness Well done Patrick!
